Abergavenny put the Six Nations behind them and resumed league action with the visit of age old rivals Garndiffaith to Bailey Park. As the game kicked off the heavens’ opened and playing conditions immediately became very testing but the away side seemed to adapt to this better than Abergavenny and were first on the score sheet after the Garn scrum half broke away from a scrum on the twenty two and showed the Abergavenny defence a clean pair of heels to score an unconverted try. From the restart Abergavenny put themselves under more pressure and enabled the away side to gain a foot hold in Abergavenny territory and after keeping the ball through several phases, Garndiffath winger scored a converted try to give the Garn a twelve point lead. The home side now woke up and realised they had a game on their hands and began to play some controlled structured rugby putting the Garn under long periods of pressure. Abergavenny’s scrum with Staphnil, Williams and Morgan giving their opponents a torrid time was now very dominant and enabled No 8 Dan Horler to score an unconverted try. Abergavenny were soon back on the attack and after several strong lineout drives were awarded a penalty try converted by Matthew Edwards to bring the score 12 – 15 at half time.
In deteriorating weather conditions Abergavenny’s pack were now totally dominant but try as they might Abergavenny could not seem to cross the Garndiffaith line for that all important score and had to be content with a penalty goal by Rhodri Webster to level the scores. As the game drew to a conclusion Abergavenny continued to pressurise the away side’s line but it was not to be and the game ended in a disappointing 15 all draw.
