Aber battle in the SWALEC Bowl

On a very wet blustery Saturday afternoon Abergavenny welcomed Bonymaen to Bailey park in the second round of the Swalec bowl. The visitors were flying high in division one west central and had only suffered two defeats this season so Aber were under no doubt about the difficult task in front of them.

Right from the start genny showed their opponents no respect and took the game straight at them keeping the ball for long periods and putting the visitors under serious pressure. Eventually the Bonymaen defence cracked when second row Dan Morris drove over for the first score after good driving play by the whole Aber pack. From the restart the home side went straight back on the offensive with the whole team keen to get their hands on the ball. Abergavennys forwards were now in rampant form and we're putting the Bonymaen pack under severe pressure especially at scrum time resulting in several penalties which allowed outside half Mat Sevenoaks to use the wind to keep the away side pined in their own half. Bonymaen now started to play some rugby runing the ball into the strong wind and only good defence kept them at bay, from an attack deep in their own half stout tackling forced the away side to spill the ball which was kicked upfield by winger Ieuan Mainwaring who controlled the ball to win the race to score converted by Mat Sevenoaks to give Abergavenny a 12-0 lead. This seemed to kick start the away team and they came straight back at Aber keeping the ball well and going through several phases which eventually resulted in them scoring an unconverted try to leave the half time score 12-5 to the home team.

Bonymaen were now playing with the elements and were soon on the attack which resulted in them kicking a penalty 12-8 to the home team. Abergavenny responded and from a dominant scrum were awarded a penalty kicked by mat Sevenoaks  to stretch the lead to15-8. At this point in the game the away side were forced to go to passive scrums and this nullified one of Abers best attacking options. With clean uncontested ball Bonymaen's backs now started to run the ball with more fluency and stretched the home defence which eventually resulted in an unconverted try to cut Abers lead to three points. As the home side tired Bonymaen eventually took the lead with only minutes remaining scoring another converted try to take the lead 20-15 .the visitors also had the last say in what had been a wonderful game of rugby when they scored in the last seconds to leave the final score 15-25 a score which the Bonymaen coach admitted flattered his team. Next week Abergavenny are away to Abertillery all support would be appreciated .
