Bonus point win as Genny melt the Irons

Abergavenny travelled to Tredegar on the weekend to face the Ironsides on the recreational ground.

Aber made several changes from the week before with Steve Jones joining Will Williams and Dan Dunmore in the back three Dan Smith partnering Gareth Beavan in the center and a new half back partnership of Rhob Connick and Dany Hayman was formed. Up front Nick Gethin, Ieuan James(c)  and Jamie Knight were the front row with Will Evans and CJ Woodhouse in the row, two changes in the back row saw Dan Beavan and Alex Mcglynn flank and Josh Davies at no 8.

The home side started the game very much on the front foot with their strong pack keeping the ball well and putting together several phases of good driving play. For long periods in the first quarter Aber were starved of possession and were unable to get out of their own half with the Ironsides constantly putting pressure on the Abergavenny try line which in the end resulted in them taking the lead with an unconverted try. This sore seemed to jolt the clarets into a higher gear and they started to play some good attacking rugby stretching the home side back and fore across the field, in the end outside half Hayman put Josh Davies through a gap to score under the posts for Hayman to convert. Straight from the restart Aber went back on the attack and with half time fast approaching full back Will Williams scythed through the home defence to score again, converted by Hayman, to leave the half time score 5-14 to Abergavenny.

The second half started very much the same as the first with the home side keeping the ball tight up front and putting some hard driving play around the fringes and were eventually rewarded with a converted try to put the score 12-14. Once again Aber came straight back at the home side playing the game at a much higher tempo than the home side with both backs and forwards eager to run the ball, after a terrific attack started in their own half the ball when through several pairs of hands before Dan Hayman finished it of under the posts converting it to give Aber a 12-21 lead. The Tredegar side once again refused to lie down and once again put pressure on the Abergavenny defence and at one time a try looked certain when two Ironsides players had kicked the ball through and had the line at their mercy only for flanker Dan Beavan to appear from nowhere to scoop the ball up and save a certain try. A penalty from this pushed Aber back up field and from there a prolonged attack resulted in Hayman crossing for his second try which put the game safe and also secured the bonus point. The home side however had the last say with an unconverted try to leave the final score 17-28 to the visitors.

Next week Abergavenny have to return to Tredegar Ironsides for the first round of the Welsh cup competition once again all support will be much appreciated .
