Aber End Year with a Win

Abergavenny returned to league action after the xmas break and welcomed Tredegar Ironsides to Bailey Park hoping to continue their recent run of good form. Holidays, injuries and unavailability meant the team showed many changes from the team that defeated NHSOB a fortnight previously with Jack Williams returning to join Ieuan James and Matt Charles in the front row Dan Horler, Luke Williams were in the engine room and the back row was made up of Josh Davies, Nathan Thomas and Will Evans. Rhob Connick and Matt Sevenoaks were the half backs and Dan smith and Stuart Davies were in the centre the back three were Rhodri Webster Sam Vaughan and Garyn Price.

Aber started the game with much gusto running the ball with great purpose and stretching the away sides defence and were soon awarded a penalty which was converted by Rhodri Webster. The home side went straight back on the offensive and from a close range line out a very well controlled driving maul resulted in a try for number eight Josh Davies giving the home side a 8-0 lead. From the restart Abergavenny continued to play good attractive rugby which should have resulted in further scores but a dropped pass or a wrong decision proved frustrating for the home supporters. Eventually after a period of sustained pressure out half Matt Sevenoaks gave Nathan Thomas a lovely pass to put him over under the posts to give Aber a 15-0 half time lead.

The second half began very much like the first with the home side attacking at every opportunity but the game changed in the wink of the eye when an Abergavenny pass was intercepted and the Tredegar player ran the length of the field to score under the posts. This score seemed to galvinise the away team and they now began to put the home side under pressure which eventually resulted in a very well taken try by their winger all be it aided by some very dubious home defence. The rest of the game was best forgotten as both sides were unable to put together any long periods of worthwhile cohesive rugby and the game petered out in the gloom with Aber glad to get a15-12 victory at the end.

Next week Machen are the visitors to Bailey park and all support will be very much appreciated .
