1st XV Extend their Unbeaten Run

Abergavennny returned to Bailey park and welcomed RTB Ebbw vale for a league fixture and hoped to extend their unbeaten run to eleven games.

Once again the Aber side had a settled look about with the front row of JackWilliams,  Ieaun James and Matt Charles, Josh van Mael and Will Evans where in the second row with Dan Beavan, Nathan Thomas and Rudi Lewis in the back row. Sam Vaughn came in to partner Rhod Webster at half back, Dan smith and Stuart Davies continued at center with Will Williams, Jacob Butler and Lloyd Holder in the back three.

The Aber side started with a bang, the home side dominating possession and territory and looking to play attacking rugby at every opportunity and really should have been two scores up in ten minutes but dropped passes and small errors prevented this. Abergavenny continued to be the dominant side and kept RTB under extreme pressure eventually being rewarded with two well taken penalties by Rhod Webster to give Aber a 6 point lead. Just before halftime the home side managed to put together a sustained period of pressure with both backs and forwards handling and going through multiple phases which eventually resulted in Will Williams crossing for a converted try to give Aber a 13-0 halftime lead.

The second half saw Aber having to make some changes, Dan Dunmore came on at full back with Dan Horler and Luke Williams coming into the pack but it was very much business as usual with Aber continuing to dominate the game but once again small errors prevented the home side from increasing their lead. After along period of sustained pressure a defensive error by RTB was pounced on by scrum half Sam Vaughn to increase Abers lead to eighteen points to nil. With the remaining two replacements, Jamie Knight and Joe Symonds on, the home side now had a bonus point in mind and threw everything into attack and center Stuart Davies who had made numerous searing breaks all afternoon scored under the posts to stretch Aber's lead to 23 points. As the game drew to a close the home side thought they had secured the bonus point but the referee, somewhat controversially, decided otherwise and ruled the try a knock on and the game ended 23-0 to the home side.

With seven games left to play the Bailey park outfit have it all to play for with a top three finish a distinct possibility, so all your support Saturday week at Blackwood will be most important.
