Aber start the season with a win

Abergavenny opened the new season at Bailey park with a tough fixture against Abertysswg Falcons . Under the same coaching set up as last season Abers team had a fairly settled look about it Nathan Harris returned to the club to join captain Ieuan James and Matt Charles in the front row. Chris Williams and Will Evans were in the boiler house, Alex Howes stepped up from the youth set up to play at six with G Beavan and Josh Davies completing the back row.The half backs were Rhob Connick and Rhodri Webster with Stuart Davies and Dan Smith forming the center partnership, the back three was newcomer Anthony Squire, Will Williams and Josh Parr who was returning after twelve months out with injury.

The visitors started with a bang hitting Aber back in the tackle and puting their attack under constant pressure with their aggressive line speed. The home sides scrum was having some problems with the big Abertysswg pack but stuck manfully to their task and when the Aber backs had the ball they looked dangerous. However it was the away side that opened the scoring after turning the ball over in their own half, their backs moved the ball wide quickly for their winger to score an excellent try. The home side responded immediately and put the away side under long periods of pressure and only little mistakes and handling errors prevented a score, eventually the away sides defence cracked, Stuart Davies took a quick tap penalty got behind the defence and fed Will Williams who scored under the posts, the conversion was missed. Once again the away side bounced back and had the last say in the first half when their winger scored again to leave the half time score 5-10 to the visitors.

The second half kicked off and the home side looked far more composed and were in dominant positions for long periods and only dogged defence prevented them from scoring, Rhod Webster kicked a penalty to close the gap but it was from long range that Aber scored next. Winger Anthony Aquire received the ball in his own half and mesmerised the entire away side as he glided through them to score under the posts converted by Webster. Abergavenny were now in complete control but momentum was continually disrupted by injuries to the away side, it was now that Aber used their bench with Gareth Williams and Rob Lothian coming into the front row, Josh Van Mael in the second row and coach Nathan Thomas in the back row and Jacob Buttler to full back. The home side was now in complete ascendency and the away sides discipline was constantly being penalised by the referee who eventually lost his patience when a strong driving maul was pulled down he awarded a penalty try. Aber now threw everything into attack with a fourth try on their minds but it was not to be and the game finished 25-10, a very satisfactory victory for Abergavenny against a very tough abrasive side.

Also on Saturday the club was very pleased to field a Harlequins side thanks to the efforts of Owen Staphnill but they faced a daunting trip to Hartridge old boys. The side was a mix of youth and experience and returned home with a great victory 10-32 with Kevin Palmer scoring a hat trick, Garin Price and Owain Jones also scoring try's with Keiron Skinner doing the rest with the boot. Next week the Quins are at home to Chepstow and the youth to Newbridge the firsts have not got a game .
