1st XV through to the next round of the Bowl

New Panteg were the visitors to Bailey park in the second round of the Swalec bowl and very worthy opponents they turned out to be.

The Abergavenny side showed many changes from the previous week due injuries and unavailability and some squad rotations. The front row was made up to Nathan Harris, Jay Adams and Rob Lothian In the second row, Chris Williams returned to partner Nathan Thomas, the back row remained unchanged with Dan Beavan and Rhys Dawe flanking number eight Josh Davies who captained the side. Lewis Evans and Rhod Webster formed a new half back combination and Matt Sevenoaks was joined in the center by Antony Squires, Josh Parr remained at full back with Lloyd holder and Sam Vaughan having their first starts on the wings.

The game kicked off and Aber were immediately under pressure from a very well drilled and organised New Panteg  side who kept the ball well through numerous phases and asked many questions of the home defence, after ten minutes of constant pressure they were eventually rewarded with a penalty to give them a well deserved three points. Abergavenny now decided they had better start to play and began to put the away side under pressure with their forwards dominating the set piece but getting very little reward from the referee who seemed keen to award penalties to a retreating scrum, however they stuck at it and eventually took the lead with a close range try by captain Josh Davies, converted by Josh Parr. Aber increased their lead soon after when a ball went loose in mid field and Antony squires showed good footballing  skills to kick through and recollect to score under the posts, converted by Parr to give Abergavenny a 14-3 half time lead.

New Panteg started the second half as the first pressurising the home defence and after a missed tackle in midfield they scored a well executed try converted to bring the score back to 14-10. Aber now rung the changes with replacements, Rhob Connick, Matt Charles and Ieuan James entering the game, the home side were now playing with a bit more urgency keeping the away side pined down in their own 22 which eventually resulted in a penalty to increase Abers lead to 17-10. The home side were now in dominant mood and asking questions of the away side at all times but they defended manfully until forward drives from Chris Williams and Josh Davies enabled flanker Rhys Dawe to storm over for a converted try to stretch the lead to 22-10. Abergavenny now bought on replacement forwards, Joe Symonds and Dan Anstey who both carried strongly in an effort to increase the home lead but it was to no avail and the game finished with the score 22-10 and the home side progressing to the next round playing, Fairwater RFC at home on the 27th October.
