Powerful Second Half Performance by Aber

Abergavenny first team were on the road again last Saturday visiting Blaina a scene of many a battle between the two sides in the past and a tough game was expected with the home side fighting for survival in the league.

Aber once again rung the changes Curtis Price and Matt Charles were propping, captain and hooker Ieuan James Will Evans and Luke Williams once again locked the scrum Dan Beavan Josh Davies and Alex Howes completed the pack . Lewis Evans and Matt Sevenoaks returned at half back Dan Smith and Nathan Byrne continued at centre, James Lewis Antony Squires and Josh Parr made up the back three .

The game started at a frantic pace with both sides intent on playing attacking rugby but it was Aber who scored first an unconverted try scored by James Lewis.  Blaina replied with a penalty before Aber scored again through fly half Matt Sevenoaks converted by Parr .

Abergavenny further increased their lead with a converted try by Alex Howes  but then followed a period where some serious defensive frailties from Aber allowed Blaina to score three unanswered tries to take the lead 22-19 .

As the half drew to a close normality was restored with Curtis Price and Dan Smith both scoring to give Abergavenny a 22-29 half time lead . In the second period Aber produced a workmanlike performance with four more tries being scored winger Antony Squires and replacement Lloyd holder and two more for James Lewis who capped a good all round performance with a hat-trick.

Blaina never gave up the ghost and were rewarded in the last minute with a bonus point try to leave the final score 27-58 .

Next week Abergavenny travel away to Usk in what promises to be a very tough encounter a large following of home support will be much appreciated before the big game the week after .
