Seasons Best Display for Aber

Abergavenny were once again at home in the league at Bailey Park and their opposition were Newport HSOB, who on the first Saturday of the season had inflicted a humiliating fifty point defeat on the Aber boys. Revenge was high on the list of priorities.
Abergavenny's coaches were able to field a settled team with minimal changes from the previous week Rob Lothian returned to the front row with Ryan Morgan and Tom Powell, Rhys Dawe and Will Evans continued in the second row, captain Josh Davies came back into the back row with Dan Beavan and Alex Howes completing the pack . Rhob Conick and Rhod Webster were the half backs James Lewis and Joe Evans were in the centre with Antony Squire Jacob Buttler and Jack Buttler making up the back three .
For a change the home side started the game with great tempo and control and immediately took the challenge to the opposition not allowing them to settle and get into the game and putting them under pressure from the off . After keeping the ball through numerous phases the gaps began to appear in the away teams defence and centre James Lewis powered over to open the scoring with a well taken try converted by Jacob Buttler to give Aber a 7-0 lead .
From the restart the home team continued with their entertaining brand of rugby and increased their lead when a deadly accurate cross field kick from Rhod Webster was plucked out of the air by wing Jack Butler to cross for fine unconverted try 12-0 to Abergavenny.
The away team now offered a period of resistance and kept the Abergavenny side pined down in their own half for the rest of the first period but determined defence limited them to a solitary penalty leaving the half time score 12-3 to the home side .
The second half of the match was totally dominated by the Abergavenny side who produced their most controlled performance of the season . Jacob Buttler increased the lead with a penalty before wing Squire was released down the left wing to score in the corner to put Aber 20-3 in front .
Genny's coaches now bought on the bench to strengthen the side Josh Hitchman Ben Roberts and Ieuan james came into the pack and Lewis Evans and Nathan Williams behind the scrum .
Aber now pushed for that all important bonus point and threw everything into attack and as the game drew to a close they were rewarded when prop Tom Powell broke away from a ruck  to sprint over for a converted try and leave the final score 30-3 to the home team .
The game was sponsored by the Cantref Consortium to who the club are very grateful for their support and they named prop Tom Powell as the man of the match. Congratulations to him .
Also on Saturday the Quin's entertained Division 3 C team Rogerstone. After a very entertaining game they were defeated 17-19 Abergavennys try scorers were Sam Philips  Ieuan Evans and Kevin Palmer .
On Thursday night (19th Dec), weather permitting, the Quin's will entertain Gwernyfed at Bailey Park kick off 7.15pm and on the 28th of December the first team travel to Oakdale where all support will be essential.
Abergavenny Rugby Club would like to wish all their members players, supporters and sponsors a very good Xmas and a Happy New Year .
