Aber Consolidate 2nd Place Spot in League

Ynysddu  were the visitors to Bailey Park on Saturday for a mouthwatering league fixture with the home team sitting in second place and the visitors in third place , so a tough game was expected .

Availability was good so a very settled side was selected. Tom Powell and Ryan Morgan joined Rob Lothian up front Will evans and Rhys Dawe were in the engine house Dan Beavan Alex Howes and captain Josh Davies completed the pack. Rhob Connick and Rhod Webster continued at half back James Lewis and Joe Evans were in midfield and Jack and Jacob Butler with Antony Squire was the back three .

Former Dragons player Adam Hughes was the referee and the sun was shining brightly and the pitch was in good condition when he blew the whistle to start the game.

As in many games this season Aber started the game poorly not taking the initial kick off and allowing Ynysddu a foothold in the home teams half . The visitors immediately settled into their game and kept the ball very well going through numerous phases putting the home side under long periods of severe pressure, but as in previous matches Abergavennys defence was superb and all the away team got from fifteen minutes of territory and possession was a penalty to take the lead .

Immediately from the restart the home side started to play keeping the ball and causing the away side all sorts of problems. Abergavennys scrum was now in the ascendancy and was putting Ynysddu under severe pressure and when a scrambled kick out of defence was fielded by Jacob Butler. He made excellent ground before passing to his brother Jack who finished excellently to score in the corner giving Aber the lead .

Abergavenny continued to pressure the away team and added to their score with a penalty goal from Jacob Butler to stretch the lead to 8-3 .

For the last five minutes of the first half Ynysddu showed their quality when they kept Aber pined down in their 22 and only tremendous defence kept the home line intact until the half time whistle.

The second half was all the home side as they kept Ynysddu under almost constant pressure with Jacob Buttler adding another penalty to put the home side further in front .

As the game progressed the away teams discipline deteriorated and they were reduced to 13 players due to two yellow cards and even though Aber  were now pressing all the time they could not get over the whitewash and to be fair to the away team their defence was excellent.

Under somewhat dubious circumstances Ynysddu now went passive scrums which put a totally different look on the game and from a promising five meter scrum.

Abergavennys only reward was a penalty goal by Jacob Buttler to take the score to 14-6 .

The game now fizzled out as a spectacle  but  another good victory was achieved against quality opposition but it came at a cost with inspirational captain Josh Davies suffering a very serious injury which has required surgery.

Everyone at the club wishes Josh all the best and a speedy recovery.

Next week Aber face a tough trip to Cwmbran so our loyal band of supporters will be needed once again .
