A Great Finish To a Great Season

To end the season of all seasons for Abergavenny RFC there was one last match at home against Blaina RFC. With second place in Division 3 East A and promotion to Div 2 East secured and the visitors safe from promotion it could have been considered asa dead rubber.

There was however more to the occasion than that. This was a celebration of an incredible season. The best in the clubs history with the National Bowl won on an unforgetable day in the Principality Stadium in April, this side had surpassed all expectations playing with a gritty determination all season that saw then defy odds and play each game with a relentless belief for the full 80 minutes of every game using all 23 match players to their fullest.

This day was more than that even. It was a celebration of two stalwarts of the game who were playing their last game for the club and retiring as players after long  service to the game. Player Coach Nathan Thomas and Prop Forward Jay Adams. Hanging up your boots is an emotional time for any player for which rugby has become an enormous part of their life. So it was only right and propoer that all those who had gone into battle with them week after week could congratulate them.

Blaina were determined to spoil the party and it wasnt until the second half that Abergavenny pulled away for a 34-17 victory.

One of the largest crowds of the season stayed to watch presentations to both players on the pitch. Nathans old playing colleagues and Welsh Internationals Craig Quinnell and Jamie Roberts had attended and Craig said a few words reminiscing of their history together that had the crowd roaring with laughter.

A great day was had by all. Thank you Gentlemen for your service to the club. We hope to see more of you on the other side of the fence in future.
