Youth District Cup

Abergavenny Youth 16 - 11 Tredegar Youth

Abergavenny win for the second year in a row. As far as the records show this has never been done before.

Saturday 21st May in torrential rain at Pontypool Park Abergavenny Youth, the Gwent District Youth Rugby Union Cup holders, played Tredgar Youth in a well contested game given conditions.

Tredegar opened their account first with a well struck penalty by Ben Watkins. The game splashed from end to end. The rain playing a major part in handling errors. 3 - 0 Tredegar.

The ball eventually found its way out wide where Ewen Bufton held onto it, slipped a tackle and scored in the corner. 5 - 3 to Aber.

Tredegar restarted and applied presure. Aber gave away a second penaly that Ben Watkins converted. 6 - 5 to Tredegar at half time.

The rain continued in the second half. Abergavenny's scrum became dominant as Tredegar tiered due to the mounting handling errors and resulting scrums.

A kick chase down the wing saw the ball skid away from Tredegar's defence and James Coulton slid over for a try. 10 - 6 Aber.

Shortly after, from a penalty, Tredegar gained a 5m attacking line out. Caught good ball and with some sustained driving and slipped tackles due to wet muddy jerseys scored. 11 - 10 Tredegar.

The heavans opened and it poured!

Nathan Williams, recently joined from Aber u16s, came on at outside half. His first touch and he made a break. Kicked the ball on, and Aber applied presure. Tredgar gave away a penalty in front of the posts which Nathan converted. 13 - 11 Aber.

From the last restart, Abergavenny almost mirrored the last, kicking ahead, applied presure in front of Tredegar's posts and were awarded a penalty. Up stepped Nathan. 16 - 11 Aber.

The referee blew the final whistle. A very disappointed Tredegar, as always, were magnanimous in defeat. Abergavenny Youth set the record.
